My name is Sean Stanhill and I am currently serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines. For my service blog, please visit Sean In the Phils.
This blog will serve as a forum to archive my progress in a book I plan to write after my Peace Corps service, marking progress, keeping research notes and updating interested people. I will possibly include blog excerpts in the published edition of the book.
The book I plan on writing is called Kano, short for Amerikano, the adjective used by Filipinos in reference to Americans. I hope to bridge the gap between service memoir and historiographical exploration of post-colonial identity in the Philippines. The book will be one part reflection, one part historical narrative, tying in overarching themes of post-colonial identity and "colonial mentality," as called by Filipinos, to the everyday, real life narrative being lived out by members in my own community. In scope, I hope to achieve an historical context for the 21st century traveler and volunteer.
